Durrat Al Bahrain photographed by an Expedition 26 crew member on the International Space Station. At the southern end of Bahrain Island is a new complex of 14 artificial islands designed for residential living and tourism with luxury hotels and shopping malls. The Durrat Al Bahrain includes 21 square kilometers of new surface area—for more than 1,000 residences—that has been designed as The Islands. There are six “atolls†leading off five fish-shaped “petals,†but we thought the one of the lower right looks a bit like Pacman. Views from jet liners at high altitude—and orbital platforms such as the International Space Station—are the only ways to fully appreciate these spectacular sights. Photo #2 by NASA

Photo #16 is NOT the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I don’t know which track it is, but it’s not IMS. It’s not nearby Lucas Oil Raceway Park either.
This is Indy but pic was taken at an angle relative to the Earth’s surface. That accounts for the “oval” appearing turns. You can see the F1 road coarse track laid out in the infield.
I got carried away. This isn’t Indy. I don’t know where……..
Looks like Martinsville to me…
#16 is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
I have been there on I-70.
The line that starts from the lower left and continues past the raceway to the righ is I-70.
Not even in Indiana.
First clue was no grandstands. Must be a test facility.
Since I live not far from the Honda test facility in Marysville, Ohio I checked it out on Google earth.
BINGO!!!
Jim; I have looked all over on Google, particularly around Marysville, Ohio and can not find anything that looks like this. What direction and how far from Marysville? It is certainly NOT The Indianapolis Motor Speedway!!!!
I have been wrong a few times in my life but I think this is east of marysville in WEST LIBERTY OHIO and I think this is T.R.C. Transportation Research Center…..I worked there 5 years part time and I live 30 miles west of the track and live on Indian Lake
Its about 10 miles north west of Marysville. In google earth its better to search East Liberty Ohio. It should center just north west of the track. Zoom out to about 38,000 feet and there it is in the bottom right corner.
poooooo
You are correct in saying this is the Honda Test Track. Look at all of the roads around the facility and they all match with Goggle. Also notice the RxR tracks on the Northeast side they also match. And their is no golf course as there is at Indy. What makes it confusing is the top of the picture with the track is Northwest where as in Google the picture is oriented with North being the top
shut up you freaks
Also, doesn’t the one that is identified as The Grand Canyon look more like the Great Wall of China??
That’s what I was thinking.
The light is coming from the bottom, making the canyon look like a ridge. Your “wall” is the Colo. River. This is definitely the Grand Canyon — just compare it to Google satellite view at a 5 mile/inch scale. You don’t even have to rotate the image.
At least you finally mentioned something besides which track it is – who cares – get a life
It is the Grand Canyon with the Colorado River running through it.
Hi FRED! My old and dear Fred! Thank you for this your job. These were very interesting photos about cosmos space. And thank you for splendid forum. I added several comments here.
#16 IS NOT the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Lived in Indy all my life. Worked across the street from turn 1 of IMS for 14 years. We sold our property to Tony George in 2003. I-70 is almost 2 miles south of the track and I-465 is about the same distance west of the track. The Brickyard Crossing Golf Course has 14 holes adjacent to the east side of the track with 4 holes (7 – 10) actually located inside the track (including some water hazards). There are no grandstands infield or otherwise in this photo. IMS will seat almost 300,000 people. The actual track is also largely surrounded by residential areas. I lived in one. And the street layout for all of these negihborhoods is a very typcial grid, not the rural topography in this shot. Also, there hasn’t been a small oval track inside the track for years if ever there was one. And despite another viewer’s observation, the short ends of the track would still been seen as having their distiinct short straight aways. Ask any Indy driver who has hit the wall in the short chute between turns 1 & 2.
teriffic, super, and amaging thanks for sharing
Photos and videos from space normally leave me cold; but for some reason this collection made me feel heady, quietly ecstatic. The lack of music, the silence, made a great difference. Perhaps that was it. Nobody was trying to tell me what to think and feel. Apart from the extraordinary visuals. I especially liked the patchwork Catalonia/Aragon (perhaps because I’d lived/worked there) and other patchwork landscapes. The Nile Delta made me want to weep….and many, many more affected me. Not least, of course, that journey around the earth towards a dazzling sunrise. Extraordinary! Congratulations and thanks!
The picture of the Grand Canyon appears to be a photographic negative.
Yes, the Grand Canyon looks like a negative – it appears to be inverted because of the direction of the shadows. Turn the picture upside down and it will then appear to have depth instead of height.
And we can’t Rebuild Hasiti and The countries with dieing Parents and Children hear on Earth
And we could teach our kids to spell correctly!
These places with dieing parents and children should be taking care of themselves. If you can’t feed don’t breed. They can also get off their lazy asses and fix their own countries
What a sick and ignorent comment. Obviously from the American right with their hatred, poison and bile to those who are less fortunate than themselves. A 100% lack of understanding, and stupid enough to post it!
Please do not lump all of us Americans in one pile. That’s just one person’s opinion.
More right wing hate.,…the funny part is that they claim to be Christian. Can you imagine Jesus saying anything like that?
Thank you!! A lot of big American businesses go to these poverty striken areas and get cheap labor and pollute these countries because we aren’t allowed to pollute our country. Do you have any idea how much mining and debris go out of this country to be stripped and chemicalized and shipped back here all nice and clean??? What a thoughtless comment. I was an RN and did work my butt off, and now I’m on SSI, but I quilt by hand and donate them to everyone in need for free. My life is happy and very blessed by God. I feel sorry for people with your attitude. As far as these pictures, just awesome and sad, too. Did you notice how much electricity our country was using compared to the rest of the world? So sad.
I agree w/the reply, below this….bit of spittle. Typical American/rightwing/libertarian drool. Get a grip.
“What a sick and ignorent comment. Obviously from the American right with their hatred, poison and bile to those who are less fortunate than themselves. A 100% lack of understanding, and stupid enough to post it!”
Yep, that’s conservatice compassion, for ya! BTW, Excellent pix!
It appears to me that all the hate speech is coming from the liberal left, not the conservative right. You who are turning this great collection of photos into “political correct” garbage need to read your own comment back to yourself, then analyze the content of your comments.
Michael C., I agree with you. If you can’t feed them don’t breed them. Has nothing to do with sick ignorent and stupid comments neither with right or left wing hate. No apology necessary can’t stand the truth to bad. Audrey Barber, you like to speak from a Christen view? the Bible says the one’s that don’t take care for their offsprings are imbeciles. You Hippocrates stop blaming every one and everything else except for your self. You don’t like to hear the truth? Then stop your breeding.(Fact’s are fact’s)
TROLL ALERT!!! Don’t answer the idiot, because all he wants to do is rile people up; he could not care any less about the topic. Unfortunately, people can’t seem to resist ‘feeding the trolls’ by answering them.
I’m with Michael C. Those who work, farm, & produce will eventually run out of resources for the exponentially growing numbers of non-workers, non-producers. If you can’t feed, don’t breed.
“…hear on Earth”? Really? Saska
If one can come close to being spiritual and feel God, this is it! It is awesome! Please, fellow earthlings! let us preserve and cherist this beautiful place called Earth! Notice to all the suicide-bombers, terrorists, ego-maniacs …. this is all we have …. wake up!
Hi SILVERFOX! I completely agree with you! It is abnormally when we have so many troubles in all world. I have been living in Russia since my born. And each day I see as one kill to other people. Also we have a large corruption, an unfairness and etc. At least once I hear your call – “wake up!” I hope other men hear your “wake up!” too. But I am not sure of that.
i have attended 37 indianapolis 500 mile races, and i can
say, with full confidence, that the race track identified
in this presentation as the indianapolis motor speedway IS
NOT, in fact, the IMS> i could point to hundreds of specific
identifiers… one major one being that the IMS short chutes
at the north and south ends of the track have straight sections,
rather than just curves…
hmmm who to believe…someone who attends car races or someone who goes into space.
Wanda, you’re obviously an ass, and not very smart. Your reply reveals everything.
wonderful picture of our mother earth. how badly we are mauling her.
if we could get some idea about what the pictures portray will be of great advantage
lovely pictures.
God must be well-pleased at the beauty of creation; let us hope man does not destroy it. Picture 20 shows aerosol spraying, long-lasting grid lines of weather modification, geoengineering, solar radiation managment (you name it) or chemtrails (see You Tube) — not regular commercial jet “contrails.” We better stop the Frankensky manipulations pretty soon,
Oh, another “chemtrails” troll. Do you care to explain what the benefit of spraying over the North Sea is? The YouTube chemtrails people are just freaks who don’t understand physics and nature.
The proportion of roads to the track is not right for Indy. I-465 is nowhere near that close and there are no other interchanges that work plus the lineup with 38th St and 16th St are not right….as far as I can see.
Concur… don’t think this is Indy.
Thanks for these majestic pictures. Our planet still looks good…. When far away from it!
[…] View more here. […]
Take heart. At Revelation 11:18 it says that our Creator will destroy those destroying the Earth. The ones left will be the ones who will care for and cherish this beautiful planet!
thank god there is a god or else we would have to invent one to explain that that we cannot
Shut up.
Janeway….follow your own advice.
WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM? IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN GOT SO BE IT BUT DO NOT TELL SOMEONE TO SHUT UP WHEN GOD IS MENTIONED. BY THE WAY, WHO “CREATED” THIS WORLD? AN EXPLOSION OR GOD? TO BE HONEST GOD “CREATED” BOTH.
EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OPINION INCLUDING U.
If God created this world, before man, then who created God?
God created God! Everyone knows that!
If you have respect for self, others, fully responsible for your actions, being part of the solution, not pollution a voice for the Voiceless, Children, Wildlife, Soil, Waterways, realizing heaven and hell are on Mother Earth, whom you pray to doesn’t matter.
It doesn’t matter where we came from, It doesn’t matter where were at, what matters is, where we are coming from on the inside.
Settle in the past, Engage in the Now, If tomorrow happens, take it on, forgive yourself and others.
Remember we are all in this neighborhood together and Mother Earth is pissed off at the way Humans have treated her, a (BIG WAKE UP CALL) Time to OPEN EYES and EARS.
It’s time to quit thinking about going to the other side, this is it, NOW is the only time there is.
Start giving back, earn some inner-wealth, it is priceless.
Hau’oli Makahiki Hou
Janeway, you are brave right now we see what a big mouth you have on judgement day.
Love the pictures. I always wondered what people would do up in space with regards to space tourism. I imagined some form of weightless recreation, but these views would almost make it worth the absurd prices they would charge the first dope…. I mean tourists.
In the last video clip are the flashes of white light actually lightning from storms or lighthouse beams? I suspect they are storms but they don’t appear to be out to sea only along the coast so that is what made me wonder about lighthouses.
Storms of course. This has to be a troll.
In the first video (showing the southern lights), you can see the constellation Orion passing by at the top.

What a wonderful trip,,,, im sure this beats any drug you could try !! Terrific, Exciting and Amazing.
The speed by which the ISS travels blurs some of the details shown. Non the less, the progress that has been achieved by all the nations involved with this joint endeavor should be the standard for all the nations on earth to accept as the behavior of all earthlings. A UNITED world would open more areas that every earthling can apreciate and prosper with.
SOME DAY…..SOME DAY, HOPE TO GO UP THERE TO EXPERIENCE THIS SPECTACULAR SPECTACLE, AND ALSO WISH EVERY ONE GET A CHANCE.
Me too!
Of course. May be. What a pity I live so far from your land. May be in a future! In a bright future!!!
Incredible. Who would know that the Earth has us down here? These pictures put people in perspective. We need to know that this planet is our home/haven. Please, everyone…treat it with love and kindness.
This is incredible. If this doesn’t make you believe in Creation nothing will. I love looking out the window when I fly to look at the terrain but this is even more incredible.
Funny not the way I see it. Just a trip into chaos.
It is very “gracious” of NASA to make these beautiful scenes from space
availble to ALL EARTHLINGS!!!.
I am too old , don’t have 20 million dollars to pay the Russians
and my physical condition probably could not allow a trip of this nature.
However I have just orbited the earth several times and saw what “space aliens” and super human astronauts probably see as a common site.
How many other planets in the universe actually look this inviting?
Not many I’m sure that would support these wonderful life forms we have grown to love!!!
THANK YOU
Hello Ed! I am Russian man. Ed, even you would have 20 million dollars. You could pay not me, ordinary citizen of Russia. But you would pay to Russian government only. But ordinary citizens do not have even one dollar from that space program! I am very poor in my rich country! As other citizens. For example I receive about 200$ per month on my job.
And let you do not hope! We have only one form of life in all universe! It is the planet EARTH only! So GOD had talked in Bible. I think so.
Good luck!
This is a wonderful experience. I was watching the Morning Alan Glen went the first trip into outer space, and have watched every launch since. I have watched several launches in Florida. It is so thrilling. Now I am too old to do anything except watch, and enjoy just the thoughts of going.
Thanks so very much for posting this group of pics. They are so wonderful.
First, the name is John Glenn. You are confusing two people – Alan Shepard and John Glenn. Neither were the first to go into space. Yuri Gagarin of the Soviet Union was the first man in space in April of 1961. Alan Shepard of the US went into space a month later — the first US man in space. In early 1962 Glenn was the first U.S. citizen to circle the globe — 3 times. Gagarin was killed in a plane crash a few years after his flight into space.
And I, as a young Navy Officer aboard the carrier USS Lake Champlain, shared the honor of rescuing Alan Shepard and his capsule from the Atlantic and hauling it aboard with one of our helicopters. What a thrill to be in the right place in the right time.
Hi Joseph! You are absolutely correct – Gagarin was first spaceman in all world. But he circled the globe – once only. But Russian was on Moon never. Only American astronautes were the first and ever.
Joseph, you are mistaked. Yuri Gagarin was not killed! He tragically perished. His profession was a test pilot of war planes. Оnce upon a time in summer 1967 year he tested new war plane. And that plane was faulty. But Gagarin was above a little town. For a avoiding of fall down on the people, he drived his plane away from town. He rescued the people. But he did not have have time to help himself. His plane had faced ground.
Gagarin was a hero as were the pilots and rescuers at Chernoble.
These photos and video are truly the most amazing of any to this date. Looking at them strengthens one’s faith in God, the creator of this wonderful universe and the means by which we are now able to view it. But, not surprisingly, the comments show that some are still far too un-informed or too ‘faithless’ to understand that this could not possibly all have come from a ‘big bang’. “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse†(Romans 1:20).
May God have mercy on their souls.
Dewey
What a great and wonderful collection of pictures. I have been to many of the countries here shown from above, but one never gets the impressions garnered here in this series of photographs. Beautiful!

Wonderful display of colours of our home,Hearth hope we are changeing our atitude for the better on how to care for the only home we have with our dear animals ,plants of our nature …for generations to come…. Many thanks for sharing this beauty world…..
Incomparable and ridiculous… The first for all the wonderful views. The latter to describe the islands in Dubai, etc built with oil funds that could have been used for better purposes, as in helping others.
I can’t imagine the views or the space station we could have if some Dubai ( oil money )were used for space exploration. Maybe we should tell them there is oil up there.
God is All Powerful and the Master Creator. I look at these amazing photos and am in awe of the breathtaking beauty of earth. Thank you NASA! PRAISE YOU LORD!
yes, praise for the photos. praise also for the god that saved my neighbors 5 year old girl from drowning in the family pool as the mother declared. funny, the same god allowed 14,000 children to be among the tens of thousands hacked to death in sudan and surrounding areas. god works in mysterious ways
I absolutely agree with you.
love how people will look at these pictures and praise god, i say praise humanity that has done things that once were thought to be impossible
Beautiful photos. It bewilders me how our leadership has allowed us to go from being the leader in space exploration to our present status of being nothing more than paying passengers. We retired the shuttle and now we are totally dependent upon the Russians to get us up to the ISS. What happens when foreign diplomacy breaks down and they decide that we aren’t allowed to ride along?
Absolutely brilliant!
What absoluutely fantastic pictures.
The most expensive pictures EVER! —
Fortunatley nature is indifferent and without feelings, else she would be truly saddened that even in this day and age we, supposedly her most intelligent creation, still continue to blindly persist in crediting sky gods for such awesome breathtaking beauty.
So sorry that you are mad at God. … That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t exist.
.
where did i say he didn’t exist? that came from you
A bit presumptuous, aren’t we? You may ask yourself, How is it that you even have the ability to perceive what is ‘awesome breathtaking beauty’? and What is the nature of nature in that it can create such a thing with indifference and without feeling? Dewey found a satisfying answer in Romans 1:20 and I prefer this translation: ‘For his invisible qualities are clearly seen from the world’s creation onward, because they are perceived by the things made, even his eternal power and Godship, so that they are inexcusable.’
I don’t see a shred of evidence to prove the existence of a god. Belief in the bible has the earth flat, the earth as the center of the universe, and only 6000 years old. Wrong on all counts.
You are blind Dave.
The Bible speaks of the earth in the OT as “the circle of the earth”
All this plus micro-gravity,..HEAVEN!
The gravity at the altitude of the ISS is approximately 95% of that at Earth’s surface. Do the math. The illusion of no gravity is that the centrifugal force throwing you( and your spacecraft ) outward is equal to the gravity pulling you toward earth. You are always falling back to earth, but you’re traveling so fast that you never get there. And that’s what it feels like…falling. Not like skydiving, except for the first few seconds of acceleration. Do you like the big fall on a roller coaster? Do you like that falling feeling in your stomach? It is very nauseating. Astronauts feel this constantly while in orbit. That’s why they practice in the vomit comet. And I would not like it……that constant feeling of falling. Sounds like a bad dream.
What’s with the religious recruitment drive?! Enough with the “god created this” diatribe peeps
Sorry Lee.
But He did.
Hugs 🙂
Sorry Chana,
But God is just a fairy tale.
A story created by people to explain that which they could not understand without the development of science.
How can you not believe! Do you think that it just appeared by magic!
To the last few posts —–YOUR GOD IS TOO SMALL ! !
wouldn’t saying that god created everything be the same as saying it appeared by magic? what evidence do you have other than a 2000 year old book that has been revised and reinterpreted countless times.
The belief in a god is the absence of knowledge.
The belief in knowledge without the presence of God is lunacy.
All the evidence for evolution can be reinterpreted to show intelligent design, and even special creation. Just start questioning the evidence.
Don’t use evolution as an excuse for not believing in God. I know some are wise enough out there to state their belief or unbelief without having to worry about the “evidence”. Either way, it is a “faith” statement.
Incorrect, my friend.
Job 28:28
And he said to the human race, “The fear of the Lord–that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.”
Psalm 111:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.
Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Sorry Phil & Lee, You need to read the Gideon Bible, then you will understand
that there is a God.The movie that Charleton Heston played the part as ‘Moses’
and God spoke to him threw the burning bush, he said, “I am” is written in the
bible. You need to wake up.
Bravo! Well said.
Sorry that you are mad at God. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t exist.
my god sent out his hand and caused the big bang knowing the eventual result. you need a stronger god.
Diatribe? I think not. Witnessing? Yes! ‘Hear, now, this, O unwise people that is without heart. They have eyes, but they cannot see, they have ears, but they cannot hear.’ Jeremiah 5:21
Lee, If God did not create all of this, from where did it come?
Ken: Who created “God”?
You are blind, deaf and dumb Dave.
These photos dramatically demonstrate that we really are all in this together.

IT IS SIMPLY WONDERFUL
So comforting to know that our amazingly beautiful planet earth, this masterpiece of creation, will never ever be destroyed -not even by man’s trials and errors- but will remain forever as clearly stated in the Bible, the book of the One who created it for man’s enjoyment.
The earth will last a long time – abut 5 billion more years, but after that will be destroyed when the sun reaches 10 billion years in age. It will become a ‘red giant’, many times bigger than it is now, and Mars, Venus and Earth will all be swallowed up in a massive fireball.
makes you feel insignificant before all this majesty, although it is hilarious that the same God brigade had no qualms about killing the guys who said the earth was not the center of the world.
Hilarious? I think not! Those who kill in God’s name are really doing it for themselves, and in doing so commit a great disservice to the dissemination of faith.
god this god that. stfu and enjoy what you can actually see. religious fruitcakes.. sheesh.
Bob,
There is one of you once in a blue moo. Obviously you don’t believe in God. Really you must have some kind of insurance to get some therapy on anger and maybe get some sort of therapy on keeping your negative input to yourself
I would like you to go to a Hells Angels establishment and try to get in and yell bikers are gay just to teach you a lesson.
Beautiful pics, I respect everyone’s comments, except Bobs.
Relax Bob. Wouldn’t you like to enjoy it even more by being able to see beyond it? More like fruits-of-the-spirit-cakes, the consumption of which allows one not to get uptight by the views and intolerances of others. Try a piece.
Bob, I will pray for you and for those who share your views. It is never too late to accept God until your last dying breath. Better late than never. I pray that you will curb your anger, develop love in your heart and find an inner peace. Eternity is a very long time, so don’t let your doubt and anger fetter you for all of time.
I totally agree with you Bob………while viewing these wonderful pictures, I did not once think of a god and I am thankful for that. And Steve…..you really DO NOT RESPECT EVERYONE”S COMMENTS or you wouldn’t have told Bob to keep his negative comments to himself. Nonbelievers are the only ones facing reality….you are the ones making up stories just to be able to survive. You get some help.
Awesome views… appreciate the effort taken to get them.
Douglas Adams wrote “It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of Space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.
So all you nothings who happen to have no faith and believe in nothing, it will surely come as a surprise to you at some time in your infinite non existence, be it in this form or the next, that there is a God and as He is the Alpha and the Omega. I’d hate for you to remain being and believing in nothing when to Him you’re something special and His creation is everything! Whether you’re a brilliant academic or a simple sole to believe is not difficult. Once you believe and have faith it’s amazing how clear it all becomes. The great thing is that it is YOUR choice out of YOUR free will.
… and thanks for the fish!
Amen to that!!
There are those who use their faith to get others to choose a “less than” existence now in the hopes that the next life, their heaven, will be just awesome. It has always been used by the powerful to “explain” and “demand acceptance of the reality” of why so many have so little while so few have so much. Once again the masses have surrendered their rights in favor of the dangling carrot.
Like you said, sheesh. Just enjoy the pictures created by the hands of thousands of educated human beings.
For all of those who are using this as a chance to browbeat everyone into believing the same thing you do (the I’m right and you’re wrong mentality of so many christians) I wonder if you believe in other life forms on other planets. Yes I mean “aliens”. When you Consider how many billions of stars are just like our sun that have tiny rocks floating around them like our earth, isn’t it supremely ignorant to imagine that your god only created us? Why bother creating all those other stars and solar systems if you aren’t going to do anything with them? For us to study? That’s a pretty big playground to build for a species who can’t even fix their own back yard. If you DO think there is other life did your god send a son there to die too so they could worship him properly? Just wondering why then the bible says nothing of that.
Either way these pictures do nothing to prove the existence of a god of any kind. It does, however, prove that we have amazing people with incredible talents helping us learn about space and all the wonders it holds, including the wonders of our own planet.
No one is “browbeating” anyone. They are simply expressing their faith and their feelings. They are as entitled to sharing those thoughts of faith and belief as you are to express yours of detached atheism. One sees what one sees. Where is your “tolerance”?
Who said a supreme being didn’t recreate all of our universe! Call is God or just the MAKER!
Kiki,
“When you Consider how many billions of stars are just like our sun that have tiny rocks floating around them like our earth…”
Why would anyone consider something so preposterous? To date, scientists have identified about 4 examples of potential “Goldilocks planets,” not billions. And the Kepler project has identified a few scores of candidates for more study.
If there are aliens, where are they? Isn’t it supremely ignorant to imagine the universe is full of other life forms and we are just the most intelligent/advanced and we need to go look for them? If there are billions of life-evolving planets in the universe, wouldn’t at least a million of them be at least a thousand years more advanced than us and be zipping all over the place in starships and introducing themselves to us? Oh right, not until we invent our own warp drive, huh? Prime Directive and all…
.. excellent response .. well and thoughtfully said. Gracias …
listen carefully my friend , put down the bible for a moment, stop going to church for a while and then do extensive research on archaeology, anthropology, geological history, biology and quantum physics. Then after delving into these hard sciences please at least humor such topics as secret societies, ancient cults, ancient civilizations and technology. Watch the three Zeitgeist movies,do your own research on these. Read up on alien contactees, nevermind the gamut of bs out there on the topic. Draw your own conclusions, stop listening to the man behind the pulpit to tell you the truth. Stop watching tv and radio. Be mindfull of what you eat and drink. Go for more nature walks. I am not preaching, this is advice, take it or leave it. After all this pick up your bible again and see it will be different, not in a bad way, only different. I am not the antagonist my friend. These wonderfull earth pictures are only given to us by the ruling class. Please realize this.
Ken: Thank you for finally presenting an iformed response.
To all the rest of you: God, Jesus, Jehova, Mohammed, Wakon Tonka, Allah, Budda, Yahweh, etc. all preached one principle “the golden rule”. Please be kind to each other.
It was the study of “hard science” that caused me to return to a belief in God. For others it had the opposite effect. Just keep thinking for yourself.
Only 4 examples found so far? We have hardly begun to look. And when you consider that those 4 lie within a tiny sphere around our planet (only 3000 light-years across), a sphere that is apparently not special in any way, and is about one part in 90 quintillion (9 X 10 exp 19) of the volume of the known universe, then if the rest of the universe contains a similar concentration, there should be about 360 quintillion “Goldilocks” planets out there. It is very hard to imagine any process (whether evolutionary, god-driven, or whatever) could operate that many times without making more than one sentient species.
Marvelous photos.
Just for the record: Alan Shepard – not Alan Glenn
Alan Bartlett Shepard, Jr. (November 18, 1923 – July 21, 1998) was an American Naval Aviator, test pilot, flag officer, and NASA astronaut who on May 5, 1961 launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, becoming the first American in space. His SUB-ORBITAL flight in the Freedom 7 space capsule lasted 15 minutes. Ten years later, he commanded the Apollo 14 mission, and became the fifth person to walk on the moon.
John Herschel Glenn, Jr. (born July 18, 1921) is a former United States Marine Corps pilot, astronaut and United States senator who was the first American to ORBIT the Earth and the third American in space. Glenn was a Marine Corps fighter pilot before joining NASA’s Mercury program as a member of NASA’s original astronaut group. He orbited the Earth in Friendship 7 in 1962. After retiring from NASA, he entered politics as a Democrat and represented Ohio in the United States Senate from 1974 to 1999.
Kaboom!!!! Wow, Big Bang. Only, what exactly exploded. For all you non-believer scientific geniuses out their, scientifically speaking, “nothing can come from nothing”! If their was nothing, then please explain to me what exploded. For now I’ll take God as creator, besides, why Jesus Christ? Nobody has been able to explain him away. What about Fatima, Lourdes, Garanbendal, Knock, Ati, Medjugorje, etc. Nobody can explain away God, and Nobody can prove God, just as nobody can explain the creation of the universe. Remember, ‘Big Bang Theory’ is just that, only a ‘theory’. Same with evolution of ‘Man’. Why do monkeys and apes still exist if we evolved from them???? Can’t answer that one either can you??? If all species evolved from something else, and Saber Tooth Tigers and Big Woolly Mammoths and millions of other species no longer exist, because they evolved, then please explain why in the evolutionary process, only Man still has the creature he supposedly evolved from still around??? Its simple, we did not evolve, we were created as is.
Just for the record, it is fairly well established that many species, like sabertooth tigers and wooly mammoths, did not evolve into something else, but went extinct. However, I really like your enthusiasm for God; hold onto it. Let the guffaws of others only strengthen your resolve, and remember, ‘there but for the grace of God go I’. In other words, feel blessed by your faith.
If evolution were a fact where is it today why aren’t fish
crawling out of water, why aren’t apes climing out of trees,
species are instead exact according to its kind. We dont plant
mango and get papaya. I suspect it would require more faith to
believe a big bang………so inexcusable.
Yeah and I just looked under the bed and someone is either coming or going.
A brilliant answer…that’s why it’s all a “mystery”…..we will never know the answers….until you you meet your Maker(GOD)! 🙂 PS-How can one NOT think of God when viewing these pics!
Love the pics, especially #35 Earth’s City Lights. It’s a little disconcerting to see them ALL AT ONE TIME!
Frankly I couldn’t help thinking what the bill would look like !!
I just viewed some of the most beautiful photos and a marvelous video showing the wonderful planet we live on. What is it with all the negative comments from our non-religious earthlings directed toward those of us that happen to believe in something different then you do. Would you please note that only the non-religious felt they had to defend their beliefs and the religious types did not bother to attack those attacking them? It seems to me that we who are happy to overflowing with the glorious creation God (note the capital G) has given us to live on tend to not render unkind comments directed to those that feel a need to defend their position. Why are you, who consider yourselves open minded, not open minded enough to allow those that want to praise God to do so? Who is it that has the closed mind anyhow, you non-religious or those of us that have a religious bent. My final comment is to ask you to enjoy the marvelous photo display given to us and to keep your negative thoughts to yourselves. I really enjoyed the show – not the negative comments.
[…] Earth as seen from the International Space Station […]
Well, and intelligently said, REMich. Let’s just enjoy and marvel at this beautiful universe. What a privilege it is to observe these pictures. And yes, tolerance people, tolerance please.
would like to see regularly featured picture displays on the NASA channel.
Breathtaking; A course in geography just in itself. The night light composite is most revealing. Much of the contrast in light and dark has to do with geography, of course, but it seems a lot has to do with the governance of the country. What stands out is India, one of the poorest but hardest working democracies,is lit coast to coast. South Korea,an ecnomic success story after the Korean war is lit up like Christmas while its northern neighbor is dark as a tomb. The principal provinces of China, bright as can be, while Myanmar (Burma), Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos remain dark. Cuba, dark while Puerto Rico and Jamaica, bright as can be. Say what you will about politics, but, give people economic freedom and they will light up the world.

Well said REMich. Non-believers either have not been offered the gift of salvation by God or have rejected the free gift. In either case, they do not understand/comprehand what Christians have and are very uncomfortable in the situation and are forced to critize and/or defend their position. I am a 72 year old Mechanical Engineer by profession, and all knowledge that I have acquired over the years has only confirmed my belief that what we are enjoying was God created.
Ditto. I too am a mechanical engineer. The vast complexity of our universe, from subatomic particles to billions of galaxies housing billions of stars, screams of a creator. Wake up people!
Thanks for the array of the pix of our earth. It seems so peaceful from ISS vantage point. I sent the pix to all 9 of my grandchildren. I want them to gaze with the wonder I did and feel the majesty of creation. Those who feel that negative are necessary are lacking in the grace and wonder that the rest of the commenters have luxuriated in. Dave
THESE ARE SOME OF THE FINEST PHOTOS THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN FROM THE ISS.SOME OF THE LOCATIONS ARE FANTASTIC. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.
GOD started it all and taught man to reach for new heights, man can create so much but when you look at these pictures think and sit and look at them again and realize man is so small and GOD created such wonders!
[…] [Via: Lovethesepics] […]
My fascination is with the ocean – can the ISS photograph what’s under the water, how has it all changed over the millions of years, are there ruins of previous civilizations that can be seen & photographed by the ISS either under the water or maybe under the sands? What happened when the earth was flooded or the tectonic plates moved – can that be seen?
Well stated REMich. I enjoyed the photos so much and have profound delight at seeing God’s creation displayed by photos taken by His creation….humans.
ASTOUNDING !!!
Beautiful pictures to put things in perspective. Human are so insignificant to the bigger picture. That’s not saying we haven’t done well with what we were given. But to think our planet is rotating around 1 star and that star is amongst millions of stars in our Milky Way Galaxy and our galaxy is amongst billions of our galaxies, is amazing what is still being created right now and expanding even more. So me, myself, I is nothing to the big picture!
These photos are all fakes. Just like the moon landing only better done. It is obvious that Jules Verne was at work here with his camera. Next they will be saying we have photos of Mars or some of the other so called planets.
Really Phil???
Beautiful pictures.Kinda gives you hope that we can still turn around the mess we have made on this beautiful planet.
Are you saying that the earth is flat??? And that the earth is the center of our solar system???
Great task to share these images with everyone in the world.
I’m sending this email to Japan, Malaysia, Philippines and Sri Lanka, plus about 500 people here in the US and Canada.
Images 14 and 16 are identified in error but still great pictures.
14 is not the Grand Canyon, no highways or roads and the shadows tell a different story of elevation.
There are two meteor strikes on the right side-middle of this image (?). Almost looks like the Great Wall of China.
16 is definitely not the Speedway, no houses, grandstands or manufacturing facilities around that track
and the center is cluttered with a secondary track.
The heavens and the earth declare the glory of God !!!!!!!
The heavens abd the earth declare the glory of God !!!!
Joan, I like the spelling on your first comment better
Salute to the research Team – scoientists – efforts with results commmandable – God’s creations – wonderful. With advanced research, we are able to see from our location wherever we are
Without technology we would never begin to imagine these images. What incredible pictures and videos! Thank you for sharing! I feel absolutely blessed!
Breathtaking Pictures!
Incredible! I felt like I was able to reach out and touch the face of God!
I don’t need to invoke a Creator to appreciate the awesomeness of the Earth and our place in this teeny-tiny corner of a corner of a corner of a corner (you get the idea) of the Universe. I understand how, for instance, a waterfall might come into existence, based on an education in Geology and Hydrology – no God required. Study a little more, and you might comprehend how the Solar System could coalesce from a gravitationally-impelled cloud of matter. A little more study might lead you to a basic familiarity with fusion – the process that powers our biosphere from afar (barring deep sea chemosynthetic ecosystems). A bit more education and you can grasp the basest fundamentals of the first few moments of existence. I reiterate – no God required. What makes you and I both swoon is a mind-bending recognition of our unlikely, improbable place in this immense universe – you interpret it as a fantastical gift from a mythological deity; I see it as a profoundly fortunate combination of natural forces and dumb luck. And I will argue, from an understanding of science and probability, that our collective situation in this “Creation” is vastly more amazing than the parables, fables, and legends of your religion. If you want to better understand our place in the Universe, you need to read more than one book. God is NOT going to save us from the damage we have done to our tiny blue planet – that is up to us – and it may be too late.
Really?! Your train of thought and logic seems to stop so short of even the most crude of explanations. I am well educated in geology and engineering, and anyone who studies science can tell you that it is basically just a description of things observed. We may be able to describe the physical environment that lends itself to the development of a waterfall, but that is peanuts to any larger explanation of matter/gravity/light/space/time/life/etc. Are you very boned up on sting theory? It is absolutely wild! The more science and math delves into the multitude of layers of complexity of the universe, the more plentiful the questions and the awesomeness. It is this precise journey that can lead to belief in something more than we can fully comprehend. The wisdoms found in the Bible show profound insight into such things, as well as the dualistic nature of mankind. If one desires to learn more of the ‘deep things of God’ I can think of no better source. A very spiritual friend once likened it to trying to take a drink from a fire hose, it is difficult and we are only capable of gathering so much of it in. However, there is a promise, that one day new scrolls will be opened to us. Let us each pray that we make it to that ‘new earth’. For those who do, the glory will never cease.
Todd,
Very well and eloquently expressed!
Eloquent yes. Every breathing thing, let it praise Jah.
earthartist of course/todd u so got it wrong
WOW, that is something I really would like to do. Go for ride in the Shuttle, that would be so awsome. I keep thinking to day will come and we can ride it like an airplane, buy a ticket and you’re on. That is most likely as close as I will ever come to going for a ride. This is a keeper, then I can go back and take a ride whenever I want..
Beautiful pictures as seen through the eyes of a camera. The comments that follow are beautiful.
# 35 seems planted. Whole earth cannot be dark simultaneously. And space station can not take a FLAT earth photograph.
I’ve read many of the comments… to begin with, these pictures are truly awesome and without taking into consideration they were made possible by our wonderful Creator… should be enjoyed just for the beauty and majesty they convey.
Next, to those of you who object to those of us who want to give credit to our Creator… if you object, just ignore it. Why is it non-believers insist on saying bad things to us, about us, and especially about our God!… this proves only ONE thing to the rest of the world… you are afraid of knowing (or even thinking) the truth because that would belittle your belief in yourself. We are not trying to “shove” something at you, merely expressing our opinion… you’ve expressed yours. but in such a negative way that you make us all realize your opinion isn’t really worth much when you must attack us in the process. However, there is still hope for you all… God will forgive you when you ask Him to do so.
Perhaps it is because for centuries believers have tried to dictate to free thinkers what was acceptable and not acceptable to think and believe. I do not presume to know the “Truth”, and I find people who think they do, whether believer OR non-believer, to be presumptious. Still, I must add that I fall far closer to what “believers” would consider a non-believer.
Trully amazing pictures! Hands to the creator who created it all! Explain that! The pictures extremely shows the things of this earth is far beyond our measures. Thats we trully exist. Beauty lies upon the beholder and the lens of the camera helps us all to vision that. Believe it because it does exist, find out within you. Answers are all in the book of life.
Very Awesome photos and videos!!!
On the god subject. I guess Im kinda atheist, but not saying I dont believe in something powerful out there. I just have one question: If God created earth, who created God? Chicken or the egg……
God was not created. He is the alpha and the omega. Kinda hard to wrap your head around but so is our own existence and that of the cosmos, but here we are. You ever try to understand how time and space can be relative and not absolute? Seems as though they are, because in order for satellites to give you an accurate GPS location you need to a figure in a correction for the speed of the spacecraft relative to you because time is passing slower on board the equipment in orbit. I think faith requires an acceptance of some out-of-the-box realities. Take free will for example. If you believe in it then at some level you must also recognize the immaterial. One strange aside – Einstein, a practitioner in new ways of looking at things, did not believe in free will. I try to keep it simple, like Descarte’s proof of his own existence -‘I think therefore I am’, and use John 4:19 as proof of God – ‘As for us, we love, because he (God) first loved us’.
Wow. Got an answer for everything, eh?
Person to person we have much more in common than we have in differences. But please stop trying to convert us.
that’s totally awesome,.. i love that pics so much.. so beautiful..
[…]Thanks Greg! http://www.lovethesepics.com/2011/10/iss-envy-breathtaking-views-of-earth/ Editors note:     Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!  […]
Absolutely outstanding, continue doing the good work.
Truly sensational photography & images of places in ways which are so amazing to see and experience…..
The pictures are awesome, the beauty of the planet extraordinary. After reading all the comments I say… it is a wonder that we are unable to get along with each other even within our small circles, never mind the rest of the world’s peoples. Even in a forum such as this there are those who MUST attempt to force their ideas on others, both for and/or against. We will never find peace if we can’t simply agree to allow the other person to have his/her own thoughts, ideas and beliefs. How can you look at these marvelous photos and then turn around and browbeat each other? AND as I read my own comments I realize even with the best of intentions, I am doing the same…..I am sorry. Just enjoy the great pictures.
Ditto…looking from space to earth…one would never know the human turmoil that exists. Often, we find ourselves so immersed in everyday life, we forget the miracle of just existing. Existing on such a beautiful planet with so many possibilities and yet fragile… We are part of this existance and in such have our place. Humans can be arrogant at times. One human can have an immense impact on this planet…good or bad. In the scheme of all creation, all life forms have their place and none are immune to their demise. As we born, we will all have our time to die. It is what we do with the time and how we view our place in being here that matters. Do we contribute or do we take away?
Look again at the photos…without cynisim…see the miracle that is earth and the privilege we have in being here. Whether you believe in God or not, that is between you and God. but there is no denying that this planet exists…like a miraculous puzzle where all the pieces fit and when you see the completion of that puzzle, really see the full picture… awe should be your reaction. Now look again at the photos…immagine the earth as the same beautiful place…imagine never having been on the planet only viewing it for the first time as you come upon it…what are the possibilties of how we could see the planet once we arrived? Thankful and appreciative, Angelika
Excellent Phtos! One correction–> Photo 16 is actually Honda’s Transportation Research Center near Marysville, Ohio. I work at the R&D Center there . My house is also in the frame. You see the test tacks, the Marysvile and East Liberty Honda Manufacturing plants, and the Ohio Center of Honda R&D. The Indy Raceway is a 2 hour dive west and in a more populat4ed area.
These were absolutely breath taking. The one of the moon so very clear and you could see the ladys face in the moon. Known as the Gibson Girl.
The panoramic photo of the earth showing the night lights would be impossible to take from only 240 miles above the surface of the planet – the height of the Space Station (hardly “Outer Space”)
Those of you who feel compelled to “witness” for your god(s) or goddess(es) need to realize some of us who would just enjoy the pictures, magnificent pictures, now feel compelled to point out that you are pushing air. There is no credible evidence for the miracles your mythologies are built on.
Sorry to be blunt, but it’s true. Things are more pleasant without proselytization.
Agreed. Proselytizing is a way of enforcing one’s belief. If you don’t want your religious beliefs denigrated, don’t bring up the subject. Keep in mind that God is a metaphor for everything you cannot understand, while ignorance is the triumph of this metaphor.
Keep the faith, but keep it to yourself.
It is the eye of the great one from the sky as he looks at the earth. It is fabulous
I can’t believe with all those beautiful pictures and all you guys want to talk about is a race track.
How humbling to see parts of this planet that I will most likely never see any other way, especially from that perspective.
That Grand Canyon picture really has me. It is amazing how our brains are programmed. I could not get my mind around it until I turned the picture around 180 degrees. Why is that? Are we programmed to see shadows from one direction only?
It is truely a masterful creation, Lets not screw it up.
These wonderful, awe-inspiring photos seem to inspire some people to press upon us their religious beliefs. Can’t we just enjoy them for what they are? Is anything awe-inspiring a ‘proof’ of … Jesus? Muhammad? whoever? whatever? I think not!
[…] Fellow author David Knight passed on this awesome link – ISS Envy: Breathtaking Views of Earth. Be sure to watch the video at the end! […]
thank you so much whoever put this together. our grandchildren will be delighted and excited to see this.
[…] ISS Envy: Breathtaking Views of Earth[…]
as i said, my neighbor was so happy that god saved her 5 year old daughter from drowning in the family pool. funny about that, because at the same time god was letting thousands of children being hacked to death by machetes in sudan and surrounding areas of africa. i guess god works in mysterious ways
There is only one place where we can live: this planet Earth! Let us take care of it!
what a waste of billions of hard earned tax payer dollars that could be spent on improving the earth that we live on right now
Fozzy, have you considered the TRILLIONS of dollars spend on waging war and rebuilding after it? Have you considered how much technology has been advanced by the space program and how much it has affected your daily life? Maybe you should.
that’s sorta true…
The speedway looks like Sear’s Point Raceway located in Sonoma County,California.
I can recognize all the cattle and chickens as those born & raised in Petaluma, CA!
Some of these pictures should be used in schools as a geography exam. While stimulating the senses of the students with these dazzling pictures, they can recognize where on the globe these pictures represent. How many pictures were you able to recognize without reading the captions?
Cliff Bandringa
I wish there were something I could say to help all these mockers wise up. But I know there’s not. I hope I do not have to witness the scene when they are forced to bow before the Judge of the Universe, the One they now mock, and confess to Him that He is indeed who they now deny, because it will be an extremely sad moment. Yes, all their arrogance will be gone that day and will be replaced by unimagineable anguish and torment. I know they will mock my statements too, just like they have mocked and ridiculed others. Have at it. It will have no effect on me. I won’t even know what they said because I will not view this again. Buh bye, see you on that day.
You’ll be back, Old Ray – don’t BS us!
Great pictures – thanks a lot for getting these for us.
Best to all

There ain’t no such thang as outer shpace
I think it is especially beautiful to see how we have cooperated with God in our use of and additions to His Earth. The photos of agricultural landscapes show such intricate patterns, designs that farmers have created; the photos which include the radiance of electrical lights show the addition of such a glorious dimension to the geography that God created; and the variety of urban centers show our divergent lifestyles also. We are sharing our love of this earth as we add to it and care for it. God shared His awesome power, love, creativity in all of the universe. Do we fully understand His purpose in all of this? No. Do we even understand all of the aspects of the universe? No. Our understanding is so miniscule when presented with such incredible complexity. We continue to search for knowledge, for understanding, and we grow in both. As we learn more and more about all that surrounds us, my prayer is that we will always treasure, care for, and thank God for all of these gifts.
I always wonder why, when some one mentions God’s name and thanks him for something that the atheists have to open they big fat mouths.
They just can’t leave it alone.
Yet they get all in a tizzy fit when someone tries to make THEM believe something.
But they have to try to undermine someone else expression of THEIR beliefs.
Hey people. Any one can believe what they want.
Let’em. Not everything has to be commented on.
No, anyone can believe what he or she wants. Anyone is singular and should be followed by a singular pronoun….he, she, or it. Whatever happened to grammar.
I thought that, there race track was a GO CART TRACK I USE TO RACE ON IN ASHEVILLE, N.C. – – “BY GRANNY’S ….any good “RED NECK NASCAR FAN” will tell yo it’s not an NASCAR TRACK. Def: NASCAR FAN: “One who believes the last four words of “THE STAR SPANGLE BANNER” is “DRIVERS START YOUR ENGINES !” serious: “LORDY – -LORDY….Miss CORDY….ain’t them pictures PRETTY !”
With the videos, why isn’t the speed up of the video published?
It is obviously 10 or 20 times faster than actual.
I am in complete awe of the technological brilliance and man’s courage which produced the ISS and wondrously grateful that I have been accorded the privilege of sharing through these astounding photographs.
Interesting conversations. Just before the crusades, I can imagine conversations of this nature were commonplace — more primitive, perhaps, but still the aura was the same. Statements prior to the Gulf War had a similar ring to them, and so the pendulum continues. Personally, I think we are similar to the electron which orbits the nucleus of an atom. We are restricted to a particular energy level, unless energy is added or absorbed, the atoms that make up what we think we are, are constantly in motion; the enropy of the whole process is in the fast lane. We think the novas that occur are due to the expansion of the “nucleus” of the system observed, etc., ad infinitum. Death is the collapse of the systems of the object we call “me,” or “her,” and “him.” Fortunately, we will not be cognizant of the final process, because it is a release of all energy of the system, the pain, though not necessarily visible, must be incalcuable (sic). In essence, it is unlikely that our various “supreme beings” will be waiting around for long as it would take too long to minister to the failing “atoms.” The spiritual beliefs are probably in overdrive to save as many as possible, alas, each individual eventually meets is demise. Maybe, we’re like fish in someone’s aquarium…..? The pictures are great! I enjoyed the flight, I wonder if I will experience it in some form at the end? Bless this earth, and all the “?’s” on it.
I sat looking on in awe at the beauty and then in disbelief at the exchange of personal beliefs that followed.
We nearly all agree these are amazing wonderful sights no matter what they cost, can we not just agree about that and leave the matter of faith in oour hearts.
Oh and Phil why would anyone bother to fake any of this, what would be their aim?
Spectacular photography from the ISS, but it never ceases to amaze me how religion gets mentioned.
For centuries religion persecuted scientists for their discoveries and called them heretics; now religions somehow accept science by adjusting their many different points of view.
How will the religions of the world accept the first “other worlders” when we meet them; as heretics ?
If they are reptilian appearing are they made in GODS image also. I see turmoil in the future.
Now there are seven BILLION of us on this rock! Many thanks to whoever put this amazing trip together, and to all who have shared their thoughts about it – so far all in English, it might be interesting to hear from other countries. As an Atheist, I wonder if what you religious people call “God” is perhaps some kind of computer so far beyond our comprehension that we can’t even imagine it, and have to create something in man’s image to be able to grasp the concept. Whatever, I really was deeply moved by the photos and videos and hope they get widely shared all over the planet. (And I don’t give a damn where the effing racetrack is.)
WHAT A WONDERFUL PICTURES OF EARTH FROM NASA AND ISI I ENJOYED THE SAME AND WISH MY FRIENDS WOULD LIKE TO ENJOY THIS,

While beautiful. as noted in a few earlier comments, picture 35- the full Earth City Lights – without correct annotation does serious harm. This cannot be a single photo taken at one moment. About half of the Earth’s surface is illuminated and half dark at any given time (with corrections made for seasons, etc). The damage done with this photo is in diminishing the credibility of all other space work viability. It is absolutely astonishing that so many Americans today do not believe the USA has landed astronauts on the moon, a project many Americans, including myself, worked on in the 1960s. This site’s technical reporting sloppiness enhances that incorrect belief that someone is faking science reports.
I have discovered a web site ( hho as a fuel] that inabled me to figure out the creation of lightning. When the high voltage discharges between the earth and the clouds, the water is broken down into it’s basic gasses hidrogen and oxegin witch is exploded by the high voltage, thus resulting in the flash and noise. The byproduct is water, whitch GOD gave to us in abundance.
The biggest trick the devil ever pulled was to make souls believe he and God do not exist.
Time is Love, Love is Life, Life is Food, Food is Money, Money is Time, Time is Love.
Live Work Eat Love and enjoy these comments as much as the photos!
Love and Blessings to You’all, Captain Jo

This is God. Take responsibility for yourself. Fish aren’t crawling out of the sea because it took millions of years for that to happen, not one day. I just want to be left alone. What did I do to deserve all these nut cakes following me? If I did all this, why cant I stop the wars and the greedy and all you Christians from hating everyone? Have a good Christmas. That day was stolen by the Christians also.
Why does religion matter here. All that matters is that we would not have been able to see this if not for the technology that made this happen and the people behind
The judgement day is coming sooner or later ..dont say (then) you were not aware of it !!
See, this is why atheists assert themselves. This is a really nasty statement. It’s just plain mean. It is saying that anyone who doesn’t think like you is going to have a bad go of it.
If your god is omniscient and omnipotent, then it’s either really mean or really bad at his job. Either way, it’s just not for me, so please let us celebrate the achievement of the human hand.
By the way, my daughter worked on these space programs and not once did any divine being help in building these complex systems. A lot of highly educated and trained people did it through trial and error.
The truth is that there are fish that can walk out of water, that can breath air, and some that actually fly. Do more research.

Wouldn’t it be heavenly if we could just appreciate the incredible universe we are in and one another as we are, recognizing we are inexplicably connected and need to care for this awesome planet for the love of all? ….without arguing belief systems. Thank you for these breath taking pictures!
Absolutely stunning.
YOUR RIGHT ‘CRITIC’. JUST ENJOY THE SIGHTS. I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS. JUST LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE
Which god?!
Fantastic, imagine the sort of stuff we as a species are learning about not only the Cosmos but about our own home – planet Earth. What our children and grandchildren will see and learn is literally in the realm of science fiction. What a wonderful time to be alive. Paul Stark/Pavel Ctapk (Australia)
To the aetheist calling himself/herself God; your mockery will not be accepted by the Almighty; as you will find out one day. Anyone who looks at the beautiful pics of the universe and still thinks there is no God, is delusional. Enjoy your day.
It’s amazing how God has used these pictures to get a lot of people talking and thinking about him, especially those who don’t even believe in him. Somehow God will engage with you, whether you believe or not.

Holy smokes guys lets keep our eye on the ball hear. I am mostly hearing negative and argumentative talk about a set of beautiful pictures. Can’t you just enjoy them without getting angry at he said she said. My God………….. Or should I say My Explosion……SAD
WOW! I am sent this e-mail from a friend, and find myself ENJOYING the incredible photos. Then, I continue scrolling down, and find humans scrapping it out with each other over the existence of a Creator of what these photos show. To those who believe in GOD, enjoy the photos and your peace of mind. But DON’T force your belief on others. To those who don’t believe in a Creator, enjoy your
lack of faith and enjoy the photos, but don’t make fun of those who believe in a GOD or a Creator.
What either ‘side” believes, doesn’t change what we will find when our own, PERSONAL “time” comes… or, not. I wasn’t going to enter this “arena,” but here I am, just as the rest of you are…
Who really cares who or what created it.. why bother worring about it..just enjoy the pics… I now have a great photo on my PC… Dumb Arses.. Thanks ISS Crews. Stay safe and come home soon.
Thank you Father for opening my eyes to the greatness of your grand creation.
To those who balk,go hard, your day is soon arriving!I’ll save my breath, for as Jesus instructed me ,’do not cast pearls before swine’.
I’m pretty sure Jesus was talking about pigs. The real kind. NOT fellow human beings. How typically crappy “religous freak” of you to start mud slinging by calling fellow humans swine. Regardless of whether someone’s beliefs differed from jesus’s, he never called them names.
I like looking at the Earth from the quiet solitude of space, where you can appreciate something with the meaning that it has for you personally. You can sit there, in that silent place, and look all around you in awe. No one is there to tell you how this-or-that came to be, there is no arguing: it is just you and infinite amazement. Why can’t that be enough? Why must we always explain things? More to the point, why must we always believe our explanation is more valid than anyone else’s? Even off of the planet, separated from the physical confines of the Earth, we still find a reason to bicker over where it all came from. Why can’t things be amazing just because they are? WHY CAN’T WE JUST ENJOY THE PURE AWE AND WONDER AND SPLENDOR OF THE UNIVERSE DISPLAYED IN THESE PHOTOS?!?!
This is it. This is our only home. Even in some far future scenario, if we populated other planets, we would just take our belief baggage with us and start wars on other worlds – destroying them as we have this one. Who cares which omnipotence is the right one? Why chastise someone who does not ascribe to a belief? What if none of us are right? We get so wrapped up in proving who’s right or wrong, that we completely miss the beauty on the journey. We won’t thrive like that. We can’t.
We are all powerless to explain it. Don’t even bother. (just an aside question…do you think that you are going to have everyone go along with your view of anything?) We are all too ignorant to understand anything such as the infinite or the universe. Those who wish to say God did it…well ok! Those who wish to say there is no God…well ok! Those who want to preach or swoon…well ok! Say what ever you want about it. We all are amazed with it.
An eternal question, what is the purpose of life?, occupied philosophers’ thoughts throughout history. Stone pictographs reveal even primitive peoples reflected on this query. Each one has the capacity to define his or her personal thinking.
For me, my equipment defines my purpose, I possess tools that came with my package known as Joan Denoo. My body contains sensory organs and consciousness capabilities that allow me to see, hear, smell, taste, and feel with my physical and emotional body and I interpret these factors as evidence that I am created to participate in life. Implied in that interpretation is the imperative to respect all creation, to take responsibility for my thoughts and actions, to be a responsible part of community, to participate in solving problems and resolving conflicts, to speak for voiceless humans, flora, fauna, water, soil, and air.
I exist with a memory of the past, the ability to engage in the present, and to imagine a preferred future.
All of us exist on Earth, a lonely planet circling the sun which circles the Milky Way which goes through the expanding universe, in a pattern not controlled by us or even influenced by us. We are all in this together.
Mother Earth contains heaven and hell, Father Time contains all that was, is, and will be. This partnership offers a model for cooperation and compassion.
What a perfect example of dedication, cooperation, financial resources, engineering, science and the freedom of access to the high level of education that made the ISS and current science projects possible. Given Free Enterprise and freedom to use our unique creative talents, humans are capable of unimaginable advances. Naturally, by being endowed with free will, humans are also imbued with the capability of ‘unimaginable’ horrors. Most of us rather it be this ISS result, as depicted here.
Remove the ‘Faith’ aspect of the equation, as many times history (by Force) has demonstrated, results in an all too predictable return to Chaos. Chaos destroys prosperity. “The Tornado that roars through a massive junk yard and ‘Creates’ an Aerbus 380”, comes to mind. How many Times would one or billions of tornadoes have to repeat the ‘experiment’, to have success? Billions/trillions, as many have suggested possible? Faith has offered the world a rare window of time to view ourselves/universe from the Heavens. By ‘Faith’ may we continue to treasure this extremely fragile opportunity..
Let there be peace on Earth, above Earth, and in our Hearts and Minds. It is all so precious.
Those are not contrails over the North Sea, they are CHEMTRAILS.
photo #20 is not persistent con trails — it is chem trails – weather modification, aerosol spraying, geoengineering, solar radiation management — whatever name you want to call it; it is air pollution and needs to be investigated. 1000s of photos on You Tube/Chem trails showing what it looks like “looking up at the sky” rather than down. I posted this information on 12/7 and do not see it…. does someone edit these comments and delete???? This time I will make a copy and send with my forwarded emails.
Yes, links are generally stripped out to prevent daily spammers by the hundreds.
People! this is a beautiful site. For some reason site ‘makers’ feel it’s important to add a ‘comments’ page. I have never observed a single ‘comments’ page that enhanced the experience of the original site. Mankind, generally, is just not ready or capable of making appreciative comments to indicate its pleasure of what it has just seen. This shouldn’t be a ‘billboard’ for religionists or a commentary on each other. If we want to do a service to each other, why not encourage ‘site makers’ to eliminate the ‘comments section’ altogether. This way we can all leave the site in a better mood than when we found it. Now, wouldn’t that be positive? I am a Canadian.
Having read all of the comments made concerning this wonderful article, I have determined, in my own mind, that your response, with correct spellings, etc., was by far the most intelligent. PIERCE WILSON for President!!
>I would like you to go to a Hells Angels establishment and try to get in and yell bikers are gay just to teach you a lesson.
Or better yet walk into what passes for your god’s church and yell there is no god. The bikers will be kinder.
>Sorry that you are mad at God. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t exist.
True, also true, That he doesn’t exist means you are mad…
Let the rest of us enjoy the pictures and the discussion about them. Keep your beliefs to yourself.
I don’t know what makes you rollers think you have the right to hump everyone’s leg, anytime, anyplace.
Why is my comment ‘awaiting moderation?’ My comment was mild in comparison. Is it too honest for you?
All comments await moderation and life keeps us busy sometimes, does it not? Not too honest, just busy with work that pays the bills, life, hospital and only now checking comments made today.
The opening paragraph clearly states that not all images are from the ISS.
As a group, I believe these images are hard evidence of man’s ability to use Faith and Reason for good purpose. Exploration requires a lot of both!!
Space technology has improved daily life. Science & research is always worth the cost.

What beautiful pictures,to bad they have to be spoiled by such mean and nasty comments. Mother Earth is a wonder to see if people would open their eyes.
The universe is such a wonderful and elegant algorithm. My God is a creator, not a nanny.
Fantasties mooi deze opnames .Om in zo’kleine capsule te zweven lijkt me niet comfortabel .
( very beautifull these pictures . But to life for 5 months in such a narrow flying object ……
Its so wonderful to see the earth from above. I thank to the God-The creator for all these beings to be!!!
Amazing pictures.
It is January of 2010 and I just received this adventure. Photos are incredible and I thank those who are so brave as to venture into space. I’m terrified of flying so this has beena real treat. i was even holding onto my chair while watching the fly-overs.
This forum has been so interesting. It’s wonderful that we all have the freedom to have our own opinion. I, myself, believe in the God of Abraham. Seeing the passion in other beliefs educates all of us. Thank you.
Krishna: F.Y.I. The “earth” IS the “world.” However, it is not the center of the Universe. Also there is no place in the Bible that says it is flat.
What can I say that hasn’t already been said before. God made it but man is intent on destroying it.
Beautiful pictures taken by daring young men. Thank You.

These pictures are what the word AWESOME was made for. Breathtaking in their infinite beauty and heartstopping in their technical excellence. How wonderful for NASA and the astronauts to share them with us. Thank You!
Where I am on this planet, it’s early Sunday morning. I feel I have just received the most beautifully illustrated sermon, ever. Thanks, I needed that. These images make all our petty squabbles look so silly. Here and now, we exist on a beautiful jewel of a world. Let’s take good care of it and of each other. Shalom.
It fills me with despair that in this day & age there are still so many gullible (I’ll go with that over ignorant since, although hard to believe, not all religious people are stupid) people in the world that believe in one or more various & sundry gods. Will we, as a species, ever crawl out of the dark ages & denounce all this silly superstition?

Sorry phil,just read you Nov. 6, 2011 comment…but…
Evolution is the myth that man has created to explain that which he could not accept by faith.
Why is it that everytime there are comments to be left regarding a particular thing or subject it ALWAYS turns into a religious or political debate? Some astronaut with a friggin’ camera was taking photos out of his spacecraft’s window – that’s all. Nice photos, btw. Oh, and another thing, if NASA says that is the Indianapolis Speedway, then it’s the Indianapolis Speedway…
I think that these photos are just fantastic whatever or wherever they are! Why can’t people just admire them without arguing about it! Just amazing photography!
Dudette: “God is real i tell ya!he is, he is, he is!!!”
Dude: How do you know?
Dudette: ” He is, I swear on my mothers grave i know he is so it is true!”
Dude: Where’s the proof?
Dudette: Don’t argue with me! I just know it is, my parents said it’s true, the priest at my church said it’s true, most people I know said it’s true so it is just true ok!! Now stop asking questions!
Dude: Things are much bigger than what we know dudette? Maybe the god idea isn’t necessarily how it happened?
Dudette: May you burn in hell! You will meet your creator and he will judge you and you will…..die a billion deaths in hell you unbelieving satanistic god hater!!!

anyways…Amazing science, amazing research and well spent dollars. Money is only stuff, may as well spend it on something proactive i say?
Sadly, One day, our insignificant little earth full of insignificant little people will quietly and without notice disappear. we have no more understanding about what is going on around us than an ant does at it’s level. think about it. I just hope the best scientists we have (like our astronaut friends here) can discover heaps more cool stuff before then, yet it won’t be a bad thing if we can’t make it to another planet to populate imo.
Good luck with your makers you lot. And the rest of you, keep up the good work 😉
Funny how so many people can all enjoy the same thing, yet as soon as religion is brought into it, a fight ensues.
Really people, think about. Believe whatever you like, but enjoy what is.
I don’t know in what I believe, but;
“It is better to believe and find out it doesn’e exist, than to not believe and find out that it does.”
Cheers!
We are each entitled to our own faith…I for one am a Christian and God’s word tells me that “every head will bow and every tongue will confess” for those who do not believe, at some point it will be too late. This is my firm beleif. I do not “need” this to survive or to get me through life as some have accused here, I simply have faith. There was a time in my life that I didn’t have faith and at that time I was much like those here accusing the Christians of being weak for having faith in Christ,so sad. I was not accusatory or vicious like some here, I just didn’t believe or not believe and I was content in my lack of faith. What a sad world we live in where people have nothing better to do with their time than to sling visious mean and hurtful words at other people for what they believe. I appreciate the awesome beauty in these photos and videos and I can do that without hatred toward my fellow man for what they believe.

After working for the Space Program from 1963 to 1989, what you have shown me has satisfied me and at last the work I did was not forgotten, but for the world to see. My HAT is off to our Astronaut Corp. Thanks a Million.
I will start with a suggestion for many of the comments above. The definition for ‘theory’ suggests that both the big bang and the existance of a supreme being are both theorys. Niether can be proved to a scientific certainty. So as an unfortunate black man said in Los Angeles many years ago, and after being beaten by the police, “can’t we all just get along?” Second, as Americans, we have the right to believe or not to believe in a “god”. We are not on this Earth Ship to sell our beliefs to others. These are truly awsome pictures and someone who wanted each of us to see them is to be thanked. Read all these comments and you might understand as I do, how so many wars were started over religious beliefs. The irony is that in a lot of cases, the civil war for example, were fought with god on both sides. Sorta funny don’t you think. But back to the pictures (please), just think of all the trouble someone went to “fake” these. It probably would cost so much it would certainly be cheaper to just believe! Many of us have wasted a lot of time in putting forth our thoughts and beliefs, myself included. And to those who argued about which race track it was, who the bleep cares. The beauty of these are actually, truly, beyond words. They are inspiring. Think if you will, how the young impressionable mind would react. So get this to your sons, daughters, and grand kids. See if we can crank out a scientist or two, instead of a fireman, which people my age aspired to.

Stunning. Makes one feel rather insignificant.
yes it does
oh i love thes makes it worth living oh thank the lord for all of this!!
god is god, god is great, he puts food on my plate! holy shit this is great.
Amazing Pictures! Thanks to the crew if the ISS for these.
INCREDIBLE and stunning, to say the least. I am THRILLED to view these shots, especially the moving ones-like being there in the ISS ! I agree that the lack of sound and commentary enhances it. I don’t care where or wherenot these pix are; they are ALL amazing. And I thoght that the view from an airplane was good————-pales in comparison, but since the great majority of us will never vacation on the ISS, or even go up in a rocket, this is a real privilege to view!!! A huge upside to the internet for sure. Years ago I remember sitting and watching the astronats LIVE on the Space Shuttle(via my little computer), through the NASA site, and could hardly belive it. Aren’t we most fortunate.
When I consider. . . what is man . . . (Psalms) Have you perceived the breadth of the earth . . . He hangs the earth upon nothing . . . can you guide Arcturus . . . (Job). This is truly a wonderful view of our earth, and the importance of man seems insignificant(except for the increase in knowledge that sends man into space with camers to take pictures and make composites like the lights of the world. There is science in the Bible, and God is the giver of every good and perfect gift. It takes more faith to believe in evolution than creation!
Thank you for a beautiful experience, riding through the high and lofty parts of the sky.
Cheers, folks!

Love the pictures. All are truly amazing.
As to the comments about religion and God,
some people have faith, some don’t. No
one knows until we die…NO ONE! I suggest
we all believe as we want and quit arguing
about it.
“No one knows until we die”
Jesus was crucified, died and resurrected, I’m sure He already knows. He also said “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me”.
“I suggest we all believe as we want”
I suggest we don’t. In fact, it’s that kind of disregard for truth and apathetic approach to life that leads many down dark paths. “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14″For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
The USA can send a man to the moon but it apparently can’t teach many of its citizens how to spell. Wow.
P.S. Love the pictures!
sure wish who ever took these pictures and posted them would let these poor people know if it is or is not the Indy speedway track.???
We didn’t just make that up. The image descriptions came from NASA and ISS, so I would believe they know what they are taking pictures of and talking about. In this instance, and according to The Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth at http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/scripts/sseop/photo.pl?mission=ISS001&roll=E&frame=6658
It came from a search similar to http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/scripts/sseop/LLSearch.pl?lrlat=39.3&ullat=40.3&ullon=-86.7&lrlon=-85.7&filters=simple if I recall correctly and those are around Indianapolis; some of those are tagged as Indianapolis Speedway. I’m not sure what more I can add, but it definitely wasn’t any attempt to randomly defy wisdom and make up a pretend location.
