Tiny Lego-like Military Masterpieces: Tribute to Veterans [52 PICS]

November 7th, 2013 Permalink

How do you say thank you to a U.S. veteran? For starters, being thankful for our vets one day a year is not nearly enough. We wanted to honor veterans this Veterans Day with a Lego-like military tribute. It seemed to us that the creators and photographers of these tiny military masterpieces were showing their appreciation of our veterans through art. We mixed in some of the photographers’ description with some quotes to honor veterans, some words of wisdom from Combat for Dummies and some Murphy’s Laws of Combat. So if you are veteran, then kick back, relax and hopefully be entertained by this unique expression of our appreciation. If you know a vet who you’d like to thank, maybe share this with him or her? Happy Veterans Day! [52 Photos]

Deep strike

“Deep strike — A Bell 412 gunship provides top cover as troops from NDC’s rapid response force, Wolfram, disembark from an EH-191.” During an interview with photographer Aleksander Stein, LEGO Military Models asked, “You have an interesting mix of MOCs that you’ve designed completely yourself, and what I can only describe as “personally-modified-models-of-actual-military-hardware”. How did this blend of modelling and “freebuilding” develop?” Stein replied, “Even though I build models of fictional hardware, I always try to make it look as realistic as possible – as if my vehicles could actually have existed. I’m always impressed by all the great real-life models people out there build, and the skill and effort that goes into each one. However, I prefer to add my own personal touch to the stuff I build. Inspiration may also come from more than one specific vehicle, and several of my fictional models have borrowed features from a variety of their real-life equivalents. This blend of modelling and freebuilding gives me enough freedom to do my own stuff, but at the same time adding the challenge (and sometimes restraints) of modelling something accurately/realistically.” Photo #5 by © Aleksander Stein

WWII LEGO Vought F4U Corsair. Eurobricks explained, “The Corsair was already under development when the second world war started, but it had a fairly long gestation period. Although the aircraft was designed to fly from aircraft carriers, poor low speed handling and the view over the aircraft’s long nose made the US Navy decide that the aircraft was not suitable. Most initial deliveries were to the US Marine Corps for use from land bases. Later in the war, experience with the Corsair in British Royal Navy service and the threat posed by Kamikaze made the US Navy reconsider this decision and towards the end of the war most Essex class carriers, including USS Intrepid, operated Corsairs.” Photo #50 by Colby McCormack
