The Preston School of Industry, also known as Preston Castle, was formerly one of the oldest and best-known reform schools in the United States, abandoned 1960

The Preston School of Industry, also known as Preston Castle, is located in Lone, CA, and was abandoned in 1960. The photographer wrote, “Built in 1894, this imposing Romanesque Revival was one of the earliest and best-known reform schools in the United States. Moved by reformists who decided that wards of the state should probably not be kept with criminals (they were originally locked in San Quentin), California established the Preston School of Industry as a center where these children could learn life and trade skills. Running from 1894 to 1960, wards have included heavyweight boxer Eddie Machen, ‘Bakersfield Sound’ musician Merle Haggad, Beat artist Neal Cassady (aka Dean Moriarty) and author Eddie Bunker. The building was closed in the 1960s and is slowly being restored, funded by guided ghost tours. The Preston Castle is said to be haunted by housekeeper Anna Corbin, who was murdered in the basement in the 1950s.” Photo #9 by Wayne Hsieh

This is the interior of a crumbling chapel which is part of the derelict complex formerly known as Eastmoor Reformator. The photographer wrote, “Such institutions were once more commonly called ‘borstals’; facilities where young offenders and children who were failing to integrate with society were sent to a secure environment to be taught practical skills so they could find a vocation or gainful employment. This chapel was built in 1887 and was also where the children would meet for daily assemblies. The bars at the side of the room are from when the building underwent a conversion to a gymnasium in its later years, before the school closed and its walls fell silent for the last time.” Photo #24 by Tom Blackwell
