The water has eroded the marble to create cavities and marble caves. There are different color shades, depending on the contents’ impurities. There are white banks of great purity, but it is also possible to find blue and pink marble banks due to the presence of other minerals. Photo #11 by Nico14uc

thank you for sharing these anti-stressor photos!!
Oh. What a great marvels. An incredible tourist place
the natural colors of those caves are just beautiful… mother nature should always remained unaltered like this 🙂
I never knew about these caves, but these pictures should be used to make a Chilean National Park. It would be a crime to destroy these caves and the lake for commercial reasons. Why does mankind destroy the beauty of our only world? Why can’t it be stopped? If enough people, from all over the world, would protest this, the project could be stopped. Chile has more mountains than anything else in their country. Surly another suitable sight could be found. I loved the photos and if I could afford it, it is the only place in the world that I would want to visit. I have traveled a great deal and there is no place I’ve been that I would want to go back to.
My name is Valentina, Im hilean……..and actually we have protested a great deal against this Thermoelectric CRIME….But our government will NOT listen to the people’s demands.
Our government is completelly right winged, Republican, and extremely capitalist, they only intend to make huge profits selling, destroying and urbanizing parts of Patagonia. This dreadful technocrats will stop at nothing to build these artificial structures with the purpose of interfering with mother earth’s life and beauty. I feel that people in Chile are more connected and woken up towards the governments and ruling elites true purposes than other countries in the world, this is why they try to interfere with our environment so much, pushing the people to protesting……..among other things.
You might think Im a Hippie…..but this is just how most of Chilean people feel like……..we know we are being screwed from every possible angle…..this is why lately there have been so many protests.
Oh and the F**kn Project…….is still on.
I will pray that this beautiful treasure of nature can be saved. Humans don’t have a right to destroy such marvelous wonders. It would break my heart if the government’s plans succeeded. That must not happen.
I will be sure to pray for this evil act of theirs to fail! BEAUTIFUL! – I hope that some day I can go there and see the beauty close up! WOW!

I’m going here. And it will be more amazing than then the pictures you are seeing now. See you there pandie….
Wow!!! Im chilean and i’ve never been to this place! People told me it was beautiful but i’d never seen pictures. Thanks for sharing. By the way, WHAT is Richard Harris talking about??? This lake can’t be touched as it is patrimonio nacional AND it is “shared” with Argentina. So don’t fret.
Oh, i see, its about the baker river… Chile has lots of mountains, as you said, but the baker river is the most affluent one in Chile. Its sad having to make the hidroaysen there, but we will run out of electricity in a couple of years. This measure is our only way out (you have to understand, Chile is not the most wealthy country). Nevertheless, i’m pretty sure it will not affect the general carrera lake, and its clean energy.
wow this is awesome pics, i love it, good work from the photographer!!

The pictures on this page were shared to me by, contrary to what she might think, an incredibly important, and special person in my life. What majestic beauty….and to think of it buried under the waters of the lake is heartbreaking. I understand the need for energy, but at what cost. Here in Arizona, hundreds of sites of native ancestors, communities, artifacts, sites of worship, were all sacrificed to increase the level of a lake for the sake of more energy. Salvage efforts were made…but how do you compare artifacts on a shelf in a museum to standing in a room almost 2000yrs old, seeing handprints in the clay walls, seeing terraces built for farming.
How much more can we loose to energy…there has got to be a better way!!!
I have never seen anything so beautiful in all my life. Thank you
