It’s been said of Christo Redentor: “The statue of Christ the Redeemer, though majestic, is not the main attraction. What impresses most visitors is the breathtaking panoramic view. Almost every major city attractions can be enjoyed away from the top. The Sugar Loaf, the Guanabara Bay, the Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean are the points that stand out in the landscape” ~ Andre Sampaio. This photo is an example of that. The Portuguese name for this statue is Cristo Redentor. The Christ monument is awe-inspiring in person. If you haven’t seen it in person, then you should at least see it through the eyes of photographers who have been given a gift to share a shot for the world to enjoy. Cristo Redentor took nine years to construct and is considered the second largest Art Deco statue in the world. Photo #2 by bossa67

Christ the Redeemer is a statue of Jesus Christ and the only Brazilian Wonder of the World. It was built in 1931 and has come to be a symbol of Rio de Janeiro. When Christ the Redeemer was shown being destroyed in the apocalyptic movie 2012, and was featured on billboards tumbling to its destruction, it disturbed and offended many Brazilians who demanded Sony take down the billboard images. “Sweet Jesus” the photographer called this shot. The massive Christ the Redeemer statue is perched high atop Corcovado Mountain. In 2007, Christ the Redeemer was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The statue of Christ the Redeemer with open arms is meant to be a symbol of peace. Photo #4 by Buzz Bishop

The photographer wrote, “Christ in a beautiful landscape.” Indeed, sitting on top of the 2,300 feet high Corcovado Mountain, Christ is the most photographed tourist attraction in the Brazil. Photo #5 by Pedro Bellas

The statue was built between 1926 and 1931. Then a chapel was built at the base of the mountain to house 150 visitors. The monument was inaugurated on October 12, 1931 in an extravagant and grand commemoration. Photo #6 by Mike Vondran

“Beautiful Corcovado from the airplane and the famous statue of Christ overlooking the city,” the photographer described of this image. In October 2006, on the statue’s 75th anniversary, Archbishop of Rio Cardinal Eusebio Oscar Scheid consecrated a chapel under the statue. It was named after the patron saint of Brazil—Nossa Senhora Aparecida, or “Our Lady of the Apparition.” Many Catholics hold baptisms and weddings there. Photo #7 by Yvon Maurice

In the year 2000, the statue of Jesus received new lighting. The monument, as well accesses to it, underwent a revitalization process. In 2002, it was mechanized and has wonderful panoramic elevators and escalators. Before that, a person had to walk up 220 steps from the base to reach Christ Redeemer. Photo #18 by Јакша

Christ the Redeemer statue is seen in the video for Janet Jackson’s, “Runaway” and in the video for the Latin group Wisin & Yandel’s “Pam Pam” video. The statue is also found in an episode of the Lupin the Third anime series. It is also seen in the Twilight series, as Edward is on the phone with Jacob in a pivotal scene of New Moon. It is also shown on the MTV show Viva La Bam in which Bam Margera battled Don Vito to win a $1000. It is also in Mr. Magoo. A parody of the statue is also seen in World of Warcraft on an island called Janerio’s Point, the statue was damaged in the Cataclysm revealing a heart filled with riches. It has also been featured in the 2011 animated film Rio which had a major part based in Rio de Janeiro. Great pics and incredible attraction. Can I post them on my blog please ?
I love the statue. It is very beautiful.I believe that the fact people love the statue so much shows in its-self that there IS a lot of goodness on this paradise we call earth. My deepest respect goes to the sculpter.I know of the badness that goes on in the world, such indescribable things and on many levels. This statue gives me hope. What an acheivement.I bet most of the people who live near to the statue feel proud, humbled and to a degree safe.
words cannot express what i felt while looking at all these pictures. i hope to be there in person in the future.

Hi
Photographer,
I managed to surf through on a Thursday.
I had to stop and go to the church to do my one hour adoration.
and came back to complete the 45 pics and then send my response.
You don’t know how your pics touch the hearts of believers and non believers.
I closed the office 12:30 to 1:30pm (Fiji Time )
The environment in this city is so holy.
Funds and Jesus willing I should accompany my 2 teenage children to Rio De Janeiro for the World Youth Day in 2013.

These are beautiful pictures. they really tell us about how God takes care of us. Jesus with his arms wide open, welcomes all of us to be in His embrace and live His life. May the coming World Youth Day for all the young people who would gathering there be a blessing from the Lord. I am sure they will all have a chance of seeing this statute and be in the embrace of the Lord during those days as well as the days to come . May God bless you all.

I feel so blessed to have this photo that’s why i ended up looking for it in google and so happy to find it here with other amazing collections of Christ the Redeemer. I’m hoping that one day I’ll be able to go and visit this statue personally rather than He coming over to me..(though I consider it a miracle and me feeling so blessed) God Bless us all!

I pause and start praying every time I see this statute, in fact I prayed the whole time while looking at all 45 photos great pictures, Great 7 wonders of the world choice.
I am a firm believer that if you keep mocking Christ talking about an aston martin DB5 lol and things saying Why? $260,000 in 1931, you will be cursed with the curse. Jesus gave him the vision to build the statute and blessed him with the money to give the people Rio hope, Giant Dummy, of course I want to refer to you with adjectives but Jesus wouldn’t do that!
How long ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity. Mr. noname!
Quiero ir aqui antes de morirme.
Oh It’s Amazing.. very nice.
Jesus is good shepherd, all the pics unbelievable & amazing, I Want see this statue in my life.
“Congrats BREZIL “
Beautiful statue. Should not be a wonder of the world. It was built in the 1800s with modern equipment. All the other wonders are thousands of years old and built with old tools. Thats like putting the pyramids on the same list with a las vegas hotel. One takes 40 years and thousands of slaves to build the other can be put up in a few weeks with cranes. The feats required to build them aren’t even close to the same level. Look at the other wonders. They are all huge, old and done on massive scales. This is a modern statue.
read it again,,, it says “new wonder”

Jesus Lord is great !
This is the statue of the image devil that the bible speaks about.Revelation 13:15
1611 King James Version of Revelation 13:15.
And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
This is not the image of Christ lol. The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:
2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.
And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;
13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
15And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
This is magnificent! Jesus will reign on Earth, and we will reign with Him! This statue shows how Jesus can see over everything in the city, including the heart of men.
Glory to His name!
Magnificent! Jesus will rule the Earth one day
Incredible Architect.

[…] Image Source The Portuguese name for this statue is Cristo Redentor. The Christ monument is awe-inspiring in person. Page 85 of Rio De Janeiro Regis St. Louis Lonely Planet Some sources on the internet say it is a gift from France. I am so glad I stumbled upon this page from Lonely Planet’s Rio de Janeiro guidebook. So here you go- Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor), Brazil’s largest monument is not a git from France as popular urban legend has it. Many organizations helped make the statue a reality, including several individuals who went door-to-door asking for contributions. It was built to commemorate Brazil’s 100 years of Independence. So in a way we can say the Christ the Redeemer is a token of friendship, love and gratitude from Brazil’s own people. This gift took 10 years to build and it really is a gift that keeps on giving as more than 600,000 people visit it every year to bask in its grandeur and to savour the majestic scenery from Corcovado (Hunchback Mountain).
