The caves in Meteora, Greece, had inhabitants for fifty millennia, but due to raids, “hermit monks” moved to the safety of sandstone rock pinnacles in the 9th century and began building monasteries. More monks and nuns came, building more monasteries perched high upon the cliffs. Wikipedia reports, “Access to the monasteries was originally (and deliberately) difficult, requiring either long ladders lashed together or large nets used to haul up both goods and people. This required quite a leap of faith — the ropes were replaced, so the story goes, only ‘when the Lord let them break.'” UNESCO World Heritage says, “The net in which intrepid pilgrims were hoisted up vertically alongside the 1,224 ft. cliff where the Varlaam monastery dominates the valley symbolizes the fragility of a traditional way of life that is threatened with extinction.” Photo #1 by Vaggelis Vlahos

A view of Meteora monasteries in Greece. You can’t see them all, but if you squint and turn your head just so…you can make out these: On the far left, perched precariously upon a cliff is the Nunnery of Roussanou; in the middle is the Village of Kastraki; the high rock to the right of the village is Doubiani Rock; to the right of that is the Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapafsas; and on the upper right is the Great Meteora Monastery. Nowadays there are staircases carved into the rocks. Only 6 monasteries are still intact, and of those, only Holy Monastery of St. Stephen is inhabited by nuns. Photo #2 by Gabriele Quaglia

The Holy Monastery of St. Stephen is the only monastery in Meteora that was not built high upon a cliff. Instead, this small church is considered build upon a “plain” in the 16th century and decorated in 1545. During WWII, the Nazis became convinced that St. Stephen’s was harboring insurgents; the Nazis attacked and damaged the monastery. It was abandoned until nuns took it over and reconstructed it. The Holy Monastery of Varlaam in Meteora. The photographer wrote, “Varlaam was a hermit who first lived on this pinnacle of rock about 1350, delving a few cells and building a small church to the Three Taxiarchs. In 1548 the current monastery was built under the direction of the brothers Theofanis and Nectarios Apsarades from Ioannina, who devoted their family’s wealth to the project. The stairs giving access to the building were only built in 1923, breaking the centuries-old isolation of the monastery.” Photo #7 by Gabriele Quaglia

fantastic
makes my heart throbbbbb!!!!!!!
Absolutely beautiful. Would love to live there.
yes, indeed beautiful.
But there are up there and praying for the salvation of Greece and the stupid city folks are not in the know.
It is absolutely beautiful and breathe taking, we are travelling there next year.
Lia
How in the world do the Monks get supplies to the monastery? You would have to have faith in God to just jump from on cliff edge to another.
The monasteries are connected by road but before that they had pullies and line that connected like teleferics. The place is so beautiful. I was there last April and even thou I’m no catholic it definitely was a religious experience. A simple place to connect with your soul.
one mistake! Greeks are not catholics
your mistake, in fact, currently the Ortodox Greek Church is the religion with most devotees in greece. Musulms are only 3%. They are not catholics, but christians at least.
So your mistake? Lot of difference between Orthodox and Catholicism.
Orthodoxy is closest in faith and dogma to Catholosism than any other Christian religion. They were
one religeous body until The Great Schism in 1054 AD.
there are catholics in greece, specially in the region in cyclades islands, in tinos and in syros, in athens and in hania some of them too!
Dear friends,
The Orthodox Church has preserved clear and clean the teachings of Our Lord Jesus Christ and all the teachings of the Holy Fathers, from the beginning of the Christianity ! The Orthodox Church has kept and will keep until the end comes, Our Lord Jesus Christ the Head of the Church ! In 1054 the pope replaced Our Lord Jesus Christ for the Roman-Catholic Church. The popes started to modify the prayers, the teachings of the Holy Fathers, the way that they believe. The Holy Light comes ONLY WHEN THE ORTHODOX CHURCH CELEBRATES THE RESURECTION OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST ! The Orthodoxy keeps giving Saints ! On top of all these, many Holy Fathers of the Orthodox Church say that the Roman-Catholic church is a heresy, from the devil ! And they are right ! The Saints are right ! “ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM !”-THE ORTHODOXY IS FROM GOD ! All the other churches, sectes….are from human beig inspired by the devil ! The devil managed to blind people, to separate them from the Truth, to separate them from the True Church founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ, through the Holy Apostles ! The Catholic church has fallen from the Grace of GOD ! Catholicism is a heresy !
OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST SAID ABOUT THE ORTHODOX CHURCH THAT THIS CHURCH WILL NOT BE DEFEATED EVEN BY THE GATES OF THE HELL ! You see the world attacking Orthodoxy ?! Do you think that Greece is chosen by chance ?! The devil knows who are his real enemies: the Orthodox Christians who chose to live their faith !
OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST IS ORTHODOX ! GOD IS ORTHODOX ! ORTHODOX MEANS THE RIGHT FAITH !
MAY GOD SAVE ALL THE SOULS ! AMEN !

Catholics follow the Successor of Peter, from Matthew 16:18 until today. Sadly, Orthodox followed the Roman Emperor at Constantinople, and fell away from the Unity of Faith.
The Creed of Nicea says “One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic”, not “Orthodox”.
St. Ignatius of Antioch, the Disciple of St John the Apostle, wrote “Where the Bishop is, there is the Catholic Church”.
The Orthodox need to return to the Catholic church, and we all need to repent of our sins.
Sory to say but that was very stupid of you too say!!!whEn you believe in GOD thats what mattres not what religion you are !!!!BASTA
No wonder they live on the tops of rocks when there’s so much arguing going on below.
Greeks are ORTHODOX CATHOLICS.
Why can’t people just enjoy the magnificent scenery and beautiful Monasteries without argueing about religion. This is absolutely uneccessary, uncalled for, childish, stupid and rediculous. Grow up and give it a rest.
I was just there on July 28, 2012. They still hoist their supplies up via a pulley system. While I was in the “winch house” they were hoisting up a huge crate of bottled water. I actually captured that via photo and video. Meteora is indeed a beautiful place!
Incredible photos….now I want to visit this place.
simply amazing, only worry is that they’re going to crumble with the rocks upon which they stand…
don’t you know that you’re *supposed* to build your house on the Rock? 🙂 check out Matthew 7:24 if you don’t know what i mean.
that’s symbolic, not literal.
In earthquake zones, the wise man buildeth his house upon the sand.
Umm, in an earthquake sand (and mud) can liquify and lose stability, increasing intensity and probably collapsing your shack on that thick skull of yours
Yes there’s something similar in the story of the three little piggies.
Well em, at least I got a kick out of your reply 🙂
I have been here and it is one of the most beautiful, peaceful places on earth. Everyone should visit if they have the opportunity.
This is just another way to hide from the world and to escape the problems of responsibility.
[…] Stumbleupon Mystical, Magical & Magnificent Monasteries in Meteora (20 Pics) __________________ […]
Escape responsibility? Monks are industrious. The work longer days than you or I, and their way of life is as far from irresponsibility as one can get. They sleep three hours a night, they actively participate in worship unceasingly. They have jobs and tasks every day that support the community. Take a look a those walls! Did they build themselves? The roof, do they call up a contractor? No! The food they eat, they grow themselves. This way of life requires not just great commitment, but obedience to what ever task needs to be done. Monks are not hiding from the world, they are embracing life in a depth few people ever do.
you are very right.
Behold the unassailable critic. His majesty reins supreme!
go make sure your sprinkler system is set right dude.
Unbelievable ,beautiful and fantastic, makes you want to put on your hiking boots ! and it also shows how much of the wonders of the world I don’t know about. Thanks to the photographer.
I suppose that depends on what it is that you consider responsibility. From my perspective you have a somewhat limited view of what that really is…..
We were there……..fantastic!!!!!!! Awesome scenery. These pics capture it all!!! Thanx for memory trip!! Carole Michna
I have always wanted to visit the Greek islands but now, I see that I want to visit inland as well. The hike looks like a real challenge… but I bet it’s worth it!
I love thes weird, out of reach places. I have always wondered how they built them in the first place.
so beautiful! I’d love to visit there someday
What a magnificant images!! Fantastical!!!
I was there this summer! Part of my 3 month long solo backpack trip across Europe. I was really cool, and plus it wasn’t saturated with tourists like everywhere else. And if you hike to the monasteries like I did there are even less tourists (everyone else drives around).
you have such an eye for beauty. wish you could turn that inward and see the awesome beauty buried within you.
you have such an eye for beauty. wish u could turn that inward and see the awesome beauty buried within you.
Why do monks get all the prime real estate?
Long sad story, about the ties betweeen the church in Greece and the greek state. You understand with these photos who has the upper hand…
It must be expensive to fix a leaky pipe in there. Maybe the plumber works for karma points.
This was one of my favorite places to visit in Greece. The town is pretty small and quaint, but they are used to tourists and are really friendly. It’s a great place to escapre the bustle of cities like Athens and just enjoy being immersed in a different culture.
I wouldn’t want to have to fix a leaky roof.
Amazing and we were very fortunate to witness this miracle in Greece many years ago. The pictures do it justice – it is that fantasic of an area.
They need another one now.
all i want
Amazing and unbelievable.
one could never describe in detail, how these beautiful monasteries were built and if so, you would have to be there, to really see the exciting beauty of it all and how they were built wouldn’t really matter. You wouldn’t see any thing like it, anywhere else in this world we live in…Michael-4/22/11
I’m doing my best to figure out their sewage disposal methods.
drain fields?
Really Cool photos!!!
I build Koi ponds in the PacNW of the US, and I also thought of how did they get rid of their sewage?
WOW! It makes me want to get on a plane- but I don’t think I could make it up those mountains to see them. Guess those monks were serious about solitude.
Amazing images! Thank you so much for sharing 🙂
Monks get the best real estate ’cause God is on their side.
Plumbing and waste disposal is no problem ..IT does not run uphill.
The photos are beautiful! I went there last year and walking along the monastery walls was something else. I can’t wait to go back, the people of the village and the monastery were very welcoming. Great job capturing the emotions and feelings of the magical place. :))
The photography is excellent…only thing is that keep your interest to reach this place to have your own experience.Every thing is possible.seriously, nothing is impossible yes.
This place on earth is something very very interesting.
I AM a Catholic (Traditional Roman) and these photos are impossible for my finite human brain
to translate into actuality. I would have to guess the angels showed up not only for the planning
but the construction! When one sees what man CAN do, what a shame we waste our time on
frivolities rather than filling the immortal soul with God’s lavish gifts!
The beauty of Greece always continues to amaze me…….how tranquil these monastery’s are….the beauty is beyond words…..we’ve been to Greece six times..perhaps we will make a special side trip….a few weeks ago these same monastery’s were on 60 minutes…
Came here via SU, thumbs up!
These pictures are so beautiful and almost surreal! It’s so crazy to think that places like this still exist
It is indeed mystical!!!!
Water supply from? Rain?? Sewage out how??? Think about it….
Where any of these the one in the Bond movie
For your eyes only.
I’ve been there 2 year ago.
It’s breathtakingly beautiful. Lots of cats as well there.
Only downside: just too many tourists, buses full of Japanes, Germans and Americans. No tranquility up there at all. I pity the monks.
I visited it later after closing hours, although it was not possible to get in it was a great experience.

So nice!!!!!I visited Greece but never went here!!!!
Ive Never Seen Anything Like This WOW, The Pictures are Breath Taking. Ive Never Been to Greece But It Would Be Well Worth It Just To See All Of That. And Monk’s They Work . Pray And Are Far From Lazy Or Trying To Get Out Of Any Responsibilities. Greeks are Roman Catholic OR Orthodox Catholic But Still Catholic’s. Ive Been At There Weddings, & Etc And Ive Lived Around Greeks in The USA All Of My Childhood. The widows wore black the rest of there lives. One of the Women i knew wore nothing but Black when Her Son Committed suicide. Ive Never Seen a Wedding as Big as a Greek Wedding. They are So Beautiful. But I so Love These Pictures What A Place To Behold .
I think that you are doing a slightly mistake here . the greeks are at their majority orthodoxs . there is no such think as an orthodox catholic .as an example there are no protestants catholics they are either protestants or catholics .As far as the other thinks you are mentioning , you are right .
Sorry; I’ve been a Christian most of my life. Pastored for 32-1/2 years. I am a Free will Baptist by choice. Protesting nothing. Proclaiming The Lord Jesus Christ, The Way, The Truth, The Life. That’s all I am interested in. Yes GOD THE FATHER and GOD THE SON and GOD THE HOLY GHOST.
Lol, there is your first mistake..Greeks that have lived in America for too long get brain washed and are not the same as Greeks that actually live in Greece. It’s completely different. Although, when your child dies/family member dies..We do kinda overdo it.. I would know, I’m a Greek-American. I see both sides. Greeks will be Greeks, but anyone that moves to America will be different than what they were in their own country. Oh and I’ve never heard a Greek say “I’m Orthodox Catholic” My mom was Catholic when she was younger and my Greek grandmother who is 80 years old claims to be “Greek Orthodoxx” Not Catholic. That’s why we call it The Greek Orthodox Church and not “The Greek Orthodox Catholic Church” Anyways, Meteora is BEAUTIFUL and I love it there..There are countless places that are peaceful and relaxing in Greece. I believe everyone should visit at least once in their life.
i THINK THERE IS A MISUNDERSTANDING, THE WORD CATHOLIC IN THE NICENE CREED IS NOT CAPITALIZED THEREFORE THE WORD CATHOLIC MEANS UNIVERSAL AND HAS NOTHING TOO DO WITH RELIGION. COME NOW WE ARE all Christians. THERE WAS A SCHISM IN THE ONE EXISTING CHRISTIAN CHURCH IN 1054. IT IS FUTILE TO SAY THAT ONE SHOULD COME BACK TO THE OTHER. IT DEPENDS ON WHICH SIDE YOU ARE ON. WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO IS THE CHURCH IS RUN BY HUMANS AND THERE IS PUSH FOR POWER.
AS FAR AS I’M CONCERNED THERE ARE MANY PATHS TO THE LORD. TAKE THE PATH THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU AND SUPPORT ALL CHRISTIANS.
Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful place with your amazing photography.
Just BEAUTIFUL!!!
Then sings my soul, my saviour God to thee!
How GREAT thou art! How GREAT thou art!
I think these pictures are so beautiful. It makes me think of all the places I would love to visit, but can’t because of the expense. I’m 60 now and can look at pictures of the world and how beautiful it is. Thank you for such gorgeous photo’s.

This is so beautiful. Didn’t know about this and would love to go someday.Awesome.
It is mystical and surreal. I’m grateful that it part of our Orthodox Tradition. It is every bit as beautiful (which to me is evidence of God’s presence) when you’re there as when you look at the photos.
Meteora is amazing… the pictures, as beautiful as they are, don’t do justice to the awesomeness of this place! the monks who live here are buried in the monasteries and later exumed… they spend 1/3 of their lives praying, 1/3 working and 1/3 resting; that means each day 8 hours are dedicated to each. Women have to wear skirts just to enter the monasteries; if they have pants, at the entrance the monks lend them skirts to put on.
We visited the monasteries about 10 years ago–my husband’s mother’s family is from that area. The monasteries are pretty amazing. If you are a woman, be sure to wear a skirt OR the nuns provide skirts to visit the Nun’s Monastery. It is a truly beautiful and amazing place.
My heart stopped when I saw this beauty:)I am Orthodox, same as Greeks, and I am happy that this mystical and unreal monasteries are still present to remind us all how beautiful the world is.
Marvelous photos. Enjoyed them very much. Just what I hope is taken as a light hearted comment about the term “catholic” In popular usage the term “catholic” usually refers to members of the Roman Catholic Church. Greek Orthodox (and other Orthodox Christians for that matter) are not in communion with the Roman church. From our perspective Rome ceased being ‘catholic’ when they left the rest of the church. We also use the term ‘catholic’ to describe ourselves, officially and unofficially, though we generally define the term in a different way. Though there are vestiges of a common history that remain most services, like weddings which were mentioned, are quite different theologically and practically.
I am utterly blown away. The place? Never heard of it until today. The pics? Never saw anything like it. The beauty of this earthly location is unbelievable. Grateful for stumbling upon this one. AMAZED.
[…] Mystical, Magical & Magnificent Monasteries in Meteora (20 Pics) 64 February 23rd, 2011 […]
The balls the original builders had must have been gigantic, especially when they first decided to climb them with no modern climbing equipment and in my personal opinion a ridiculous belief in a creator to guide them. Between these and the Bhuddist ones in India, Nepal, Bhutan and China are I can’t think of a more dedicated to their beliefs group of people. It’s really amazing and I respect the shit out of that. Personally though I like the Bhuddist one’s a bit better. In the Him’s? Talk about rough. Some are 15,000 feet up! Beautiful though.
Can you say “Bucket List”?
My novel, The Return, is a fantasy about bringing Christ back to earth. This is NO fantasy! It speaks to the power of God and his gifts to his often arrogant creation, man. What a marvel and yes, I can say Bucket List a hundred times! What a joy to view these photos.
wow! these monks make my heart jump…
I couldn’t bear being on those monasteries even for just an hour.
OMG these are THE most awesome photos I have ever seen. Thanx ever so much for sharing.

Was here last summer on holiday, to answer the question of how thy got supplies (before the roads were built) they had a complex system of pulleys and on occasion the monks would sit in a basket and be pulled up to the highest points of the towers. it was really neat!

Yes I can see the pictures are of amazing places. I know I will never get to go there. Thanks for the fantastic pictures and sharing with many people. God bless you!!!!!
Stupid monks ruining the scenery again… But again, there’s worse, Mount Athos for example. The orthodox church in Greece has transformed into an Evil Empire, it’s the biggest real estate owner and always gets its way, laws bending and all. Also, their priests are public employees. Yes, the greek state is paying them, just like cops etc… Sad but true. Iran is probably in better fate than us here. So, please try to imagine these rocks without the monasteries on top of them. Imagine every mountain and hill of Greece without all the churches built on top of them… Our land would be so much better!
Those “stupid” monks pray for you and me, they are going to heaven! They dont need to pray for themselves. they pray for idiots like you. God have mercy on you, for your ignorance…
he is right. they are the biggest real estate in greece. i don t believe that jesus taught them to move around in luxury cars, live in expensive hotels, wear golden crosses and make racist comments on the media. so i dont give a shit about their praises cause i am greek and they havent given a thing for their country. i pay taxes they dont and when it comes for them to pay they protest and of course because the goverment believes that the church should be one with the fucking church they dont pay a cent..
Ideal spot for base jumping.
Wow! These are exhilirating! would love to visit this at least before I die.
On the contrary, interesting how people could find the slightest most innocent subject and argue about the things surrounding it. Just enjoy the view people. No need for unnecessary negativity.
Just sayin’
The last one is amazing … but… in other photos hdr ruins everything, take care of the subject , rather than the whole picture!!
anyway, congratulations!!!!
